Day 25 Nina Lane – Love, Romance and Marriage

Happily ever after….after the “I do.”

That’s how I celebrate romance in my Spiral of Bliss trilogy, a sexy, contemporary romance about a married couple who actually get married long before the first book even begins. It’s Boy Meets Girl and they fall in love, but backwards and somewhat sideways too.spiral-of-bliss

From the first page, Liv and Dean West are blessed with a loving, passionate marriage that seems ideal in every respect. But despite their devotion, they are suddenly faced with a crisis that forces them to question everything they ever believed about each other. Doubts lead to bad choices, hidden secrets, fear, and heartbreak. And yet, through all of Liv and Dean’s trials and tribulations, there is a deep and undying thread of love that binds them together irrevocably.

I wanted to tackle the story of a deeply loving couple facing a crisis in their marriage because we so often do not get to find out what happens after the final proposal. Many romance novels end with a proposal or a wedding, leaving the reader to surmise (rightfully) that the couple will live happily ever after. We see them ride off into the sunset, but we don’t see them the next morning when the sun rises and they face the day together in all its beauty and mundaneness.

And what if the couple still has to fight for their “happily ever after”? What if they are in love and passionate, but then have to break-the-sky-by-nina-lanestruggle through unexpected problems that threaten the foundation of their relationship? No matter how devoted a couple is to each other, marriage brings up a host of issues that they have to learn to navigate together.

And in Liv and Dean’s case, the difficulties bring to the surface a dynamic of their marriage that proves to be the root of their problems. In some ways, this underscores the darker side of a fairy tale ending, but to me that is what makes a good romance so powerful—when a couple falls into darkness, but manages to find the light together.

I love to celebrate romance by looking at it from all angles, by recognizing that beyond the hearts and flowers (not to mention great sex) of a passionate relationship, a much deeper bond holds a couple together. In writing Liv and Dean’s story, I wanted to explore all those aspects of a marriage and to write about a “be all, end all” kind of love that can survive anything.

They not only fight for each other and their marriage, but for the future they first envisioned when they both said “I do.” And never once do they give up, which to me is the essence of a romance. Liv and Dean’s “happily ever after” isn’t the end of the story. It’s only the beginning.

Recommendations:

Melissa Rolka and Michelle Lynn are two authors whom I met at a recent signing in Chicago – aside from being lovely ladies, they both write excellent contemporary and new adult novels with characters who warm your hearts and make you root for their happy ending.

Melissa Rolka’s Perfect Series is about Kate, a young woman attempting to spread her wings during her first year in college, until she finds herself torn between her new love and the ex-boyfriend determined to win her back. I guarantee you will LOVE the very sexy Reed!

Michelle Lynn’s Invisible series centers around the members of a local band in a college town—the hopes, dreams, and chances they’re willing to take for love. Many swoon-worthy moments and beautiful, intimate scenes.SpiralofBiss-trilogy

Questions for the Author:

Describe the most daring, adventurous or inspiring thing you ever did.

One of the most life-changing things I’ve done was spent a few months in India right after college. I visited my father’s family and toured as much of the country as I could. As a professor once told me, you certainly find out which way is up when you’re in India.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a writer. (How did you decide to get started? Did you always know or was there a specific moment when you knew?)

I’ve been a writer since I could hold a stubby pencil and scribble on those large sheets of brown paper they gave us in kindergarten. The first story I remember writing was about an electric horse. Writing has always been as much a part of me as breathing.

Tell us about The (or A) Book That Changed Your Life. (Why?)

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn will always be close to my heart. The prose, the descriptions, and the character of Francie Nolan are like a road map for both living and writing.
