The Romance of the Perfect Moment

For me, the joy of romance novels comes in that moment when the two characters thinkif you only knew—for the very first time—Hey. This is gonna work out.

There’s something so sweet about that moment. Until now, our hero and heroine have had good reason not to get together, whatever those reasons are. But whether it’s a first date, or a first kiss, or just a moment when they realize, “You’re not the dope I thought you were,” or, “Hey! She kinda likes me!” or “Did he just smile at me? Yes! He did!”…well, those are the best moments for me.

When I read a really good romance, something physically happens to me. No, no, not that. But there’s an ache in my chest of happiness, or sadness, or just the Wow moment of a great line. That’s the real joy for me…the fact that this author’s words have become more than words…they’ve transcended into an actual feeling that lifts my heart and makes me feel. For that moment, I can forget that I’m a writer, that I have a book due, or revisions, or one of my teenage kids is mad at me, or I forgot something important, or the dog just threw up on the new rug.

In that moment, the author brings me joy, and I get to feel that wonderful, tense, delicious sense of being newly in love again.

But there’s something about that first inkling that I just love. Their eyes meet, and for the first time, they’re on equal footing romantically speaking. For the first time, they see the spark of what could be. Joy is all about possibility, after all. But there’s also that sense of being right there in the moment with the characters at that particular second…that Hey…you and me…we could really be something special, when the world seems to stop and everything changes.

Kristan recommends:

Claudia Connor, relatively new author of the McKinney Brothers series. Very emotional and beautiful writing. You will need tissues!

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced sheer joy.

Sitting on the porch the other day. Summer, birds, good coffee, kids still asleep, book in hand, perfect weather, McIrish in the chair next to me. Simple and perfect.

Tell us about a place that brings you joy, or is attached to a memory of joy.

Boat Meadow, Eastham, Massachusetts. It’s on the bay side of the Cape, and when the tide goes out, you can walk out almost a mile. The sand is rippled, little crabs scurry about, seagulls and sand pipers look for their dinner. I’ve been going there all my life. I want my ashes scattered there, in fact. I’ve never been there and not felt my soul smile.

Tell us about a sound that brings you joy.

Rain on the skylights of my attic office. It’s so cozy and perfect, writing on a rainy afternoon…

What recent book have you read that brought you joy. (Or a book you read in your life that brought you so much joy you’ve never forgotten it.) Why?

THE BOY MOST LIKELY TO by Huntley Fitzpatrick brought me such joy (and tears). It’s so beautifully and honestly written, it’s such a brave and funny book, and it’s a YA where no one dies of cancer. Seriously, it’s a masterpiece that every teenager and adult should read. (You can read Huntley’s RARM post here.)

And for fun, the joy of choice ~

Pick your Chris! Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Chris Rock, chris-pine-smileChris Evans or Christopher Plummer (circ. 1964 aka Capt. Von Trapp?) – trying for a little diversity! ;o)

Chris Pine. Those eyes. That smile. That stubble.

I loved your post! I also really enjoy the first aww moment between the main characters! I absolutely adore all your books especially Too Good to be True! That book is my all time favorite, there are just so many cute and laugh out loud moments! Although that can also be said about all your books too. Your books are the rare few that I can read over and over and it just gets better every time! I already started If You Only Knew and I’m loving it! So thank you for your wonderful books!

  • Kelly

I agree!! There is just something about that first moment when there is so much potential, the promise of what could be. We forget about those moments, not just in regards to relationships, as we get older.

  • Sue G.

Nice post. I love sitting with my hubby in quiet with no kids around. This year all three of our kids are now away at college. It has been a nice change!

I don’t read a lot of women’s fiction generally. But I figured, “If Kristan wrote it, it must be good.” I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of If Only You Knew and I LOVED IT. Y’all go read it now! Thanks, Kristan.

“When I read a really good romance, something physically happens to me. […] there’s an ache in my chest of happiness, or sadness, or just the Wow moment of a great line.”

I totally agree with what you said here!!
You are a new author to me, so I’m really looking forward to read your books 🙂

  • Lisa Hutson

I love books that don’t give away the final couple in the first few pages.
Well, I guess sometimes that is fun too. I have read stories where there was the ”wow” scene in the first few pages and it turned out to be a great story.
But I love to be surprised as the story goes along. About who will be ”the” couple.
And then, as you said, there is a moment when it becomes clear.
Forget it, I just love reading romance with a happy ending. haha

  • Colleen Plasek

I love your books. I agree completely it’s how the relationships builds and the challenges the characters work through. Plus, it’s great when there’s humor built in as well.

Love your books. Just went across to mark a Claudia Connor’s book on GR only to find it already marked with lots of stars from my ‘friends’ there. Okay has to go higher up. (not entering, just commenting).

  • Betül

I so appreciate your comment that joy is about the spark, the possibility of what could be. I’m reading a book right now in which the main characters were forced to marry. Their plan is to find a judge and have the marriage annulled as soon as possible. I can’t wait to find out how this marriage is turned around; how they find that spark, the possibility to find love and a happily-ever-after.

    • Kristan Higgins

      Love marriage of convenience stories!

  • Angela W

You are one of my favorite authors, and your Facebook posts bring smiles to my day. thank you!

Can’t wait to read your newest book, it was great listening to you talk in Naperville on Wednesday night. And I got an autographed copy, what could be better than that?

    • Kristan Higgins

It was great meeting you, Laura!

  • Jerry Marlatt Pierson

I find that I get sheer joy in most of the books I read because they take me away for an adventure of one kind or another. Thank you for your giveaway and a chance to win.

  • Katy Lee

    I love that feeling!

  • Stephanie Stevens Chalbeck

I am excited to read this newest book of yours!

  • Ellen

Thanks for so many great stories. Simple moments can be the best. Thanks for sharing.

  • T. Rosado

I pre-ordered your new book, If You Only Knew, when it was first available. It sounds great! I read a number of different genres, but they need to have at least a small element of romance to keep me reading. Maybe not always, but mostly.

I love that you enjoyed The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick. MyLife Next Door was one of my favorite reads from 2015. I am a 45 year old mom of teenagers and LOVE reading young adult fiction along with more adult fare. I’m blown away by the writing you find in today’s YA. Granted, there are many classics that I enjoyed as a young person, but the young adult books of today are so much more appealing than when I was young. Also, my daughter is 16 and we will share notes if we read the same book. Kristan, I am curious as to why you might pick up a YA book and what you think the appeal is to adults who read them?

    • Kristan Higgins

I think what I love about Huntley’s writing is the intelligence of the characters. She doesn’t dumb down the teenagers, but she also is an expert at weaving in their sense of high drama without being condescending.

  • Carin Shaughnessy

Just got If You Only Knew in the mail today and cannot wait to read it! Just have to finish the 3rd book in a trilogy, you know.

  • May

I love your books. 🙂 The characters always make me laugh!

  • Kristan! Great post! Ah yes, that moment. Totally agree. And we still need to have that throw down over Chris Pine. lol. xo

  • Diana Giote

    Beautiful interview.
    Chris Pine is perfect!!!!!

    Artemis Giote

  • Your books have brought me those moments you describe where the real world recedes and the fictional world is the new reality. Such a gift. Thank you for that!

  • kirsten west

I love sitting on our patio with the dogs early in the morning, listening to the birds and the waterfall in our pond.

  • Carlene Reeves

I really enjoy reading YA books even though I am an adult. I will have to check out The Boy Most Likely To.

  • Jennifer C

I really enjoyed reading your essay! My favorite spot to read is on my screened porch when it’s raining. Love it! Also love your books!

  • Michele H.

I find joy in books that take me away from my real world for a little while that leave me with a happy ending at the end. It doesn’t matter if it’s suspenseful, sweet, or sassy, the escape and the satisfaction at the end are the two things I need to restore my inner balance.

  • Brenda E

Great post. Kristan, your books are always on my must-read list.

  • Bube

What a wonderful post!Always a joy to read your words Kristan 🙂
    Love your books 🙂

  • Diane Sallans

I love your posts about McIrish – what does he say about them?

  • Jennifer Nicholson Agolino

I can’t wait to read your latest book!

  • Alyn Yang

Yes! That’s how I know I read a really good romance too! The feelings in the book become real!

  • Eileen Aberman-Wells

I want to go all fangirl and SQUEE!!!! I love your books and YES, I’ve read all of them, at least once. I agree with you about how an author affects their reader. I loved how you made me laugh out loud when I read Waiting on You (the art class and conversation between Colleen & her mom). Then there’s The Perfect Match where I could so relate to Honor’s relationship with Mr. Perfect. Been there, dated the same guy, have the scars. Just One of the Guys introduced you to me and then I had to read your prior stories. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and writing awesome books.

  • Martha B

I have enjoyed ALL your books. That being said, the Blue Heron Series are among my favorites. I’m really looking forward to Connor’s book (since Colleen got her well earned Happily-Ever-After). If You Only Knew is on my TBR shelf.

  • Glenda

Without that first moment, the romance will never happen…. 🙂 Great post Kristan!

  • Joanna Moreno

“… the fact that this author’s words have become more than words…they’ve transcended into an actual feeling that lifts my heart and makes me feel.” Oh, my gosh, YES! That’s exactly how I feel every time I read a good romance that touches. I’m going to have to add that my favorite quotes!

  • Connie Saunders

I also love the sound of rain on our skylight. Ours is in the bathroom next to our bedroom and I love the luxury of waking up to this sound, turning over and going back to sleep. Doesn’t happen often but Oh, the joy!

  • Michele Hayes

I love your books. Thank you for the chance to win.

  • Stephanie H

What a wonderful piece, at once funny, heart happy. and swoon worthy. Thank you!
