Lorelei’s Lit Lair – A Joyous Journey to Romance

Welcome!

Be sure to visit ReadARomanceMonth.com every day in August to see what all 93+ authors have to say about the Joy of Romance.

Do you love Romance? Let’s celebrate. xo

My Path to Romance, a Surprising and Joyous Journey!

Many of you probably discovered romance in your teens through your mom’s stash of RARM tradeLLL1romance novels.  I instead discovered romance through my daughter in 2007, and purely by accident. It all started when she wanted to read the Twilight series. Incredulous as to what drew people to read such tales, I went to the first page, just to check it out and to see what all the commotion was about. Seven days later, I’d read all four books and it was like a switch in me was flipped ON. I went to my library and started reading women’s fiction, mysteries, but I truly found my match in romance! Why? Because I found romances brought joy, laughter and love to my heart. I was inspired by how heroes and heroines overcame obstacles, plus so many other positive traits—and of course the happy endings!

Reading romances made me realize that we’re not alone in certain experiences in our rarmLLLsm1lives. Also, I think subconsciously certain events inspire us to become better people; they inspire us to build a sense of community, to offer a helping hand to our seniors, friends and family. We also learn a great deal of respect and appreciation for others, such as the brave servicemen and women who protect us each day. Romance authors take us on many journeys – sometimes back in time, or to different worlds, or even right here in the present. Their books evoke emotions with such ease that sometimes for a few hours we forget that what’s happening in the story isn’t real. We go through highs and lows with the characters, cheering them on or shedding tears of laughter, joy or sorrow with them. But, in the end, love always prevails.

You may enjoy the sweet kind of romance novels, with kisses that melt your heart or rarmLLLsm2those where passions ignite the pages in flames.  It’s not a one-size-fits -all kind of genre. I quickly discovered the difference when I went from the Twilight Saga to books by Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, Cherry Adair and Lisa Kleypas, just to name a few. Yes, there’s drama, action, suspense and happily ever afters, yet the love stories all unfold in very different ways.  While I now know where my comfort zone lies, my book choices satisfy what I’m in the mood for, whether it be for historicals, contemporaries, YA, mysteries, paranormals or military romances. So, whether you prefer reading novels that are one, ten or fifty shades of romance, there’s a book for everyone.

Something amazing happened on my quest to find books in my comfort zone. I felt like Goldilocks and the three bears. I read and read in search of my “just right” authors. I enjoyed all of Suzanne Brockmann’s  books. Prince Joe will forever remain a favorite, asKristan Higgins Waiting on You well as Robyn Carr’s Virgin River. But in 2010 I discovered one particular author and did something I’d never done before. I wrote my first fan mail. Her books had all the elements I was looking for in a story, and I felt the need to let her know.  Honestly, I thought I’d get a response in a month or maybe never. To my surprise she replied the next day! I remember replying, “OMG!” and proclaimed to be her BFF- Biggest Fan Forever. This author was Kristan Higgins. She was so friendly and down to earth, just like her stories.  She invited me to follow her on Facebook. That’s when her daily posts and recommendations opened my eyes to the world of romance writers. I discovered what a supportive, generous and talented community this is.  The romance author community inspired me to create Lorelei’s Lit Lair on Facebook and other social media spots to share with others the amazing authors I discover each day.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Authors are real women, like you and me. Yes, that’s right.  They all have different personalities, hobbies and  interests. Some are shy, Prince Joeothers are outgoing. Many are moms with kids and have pets. Some are even grandparents. They also have good days and bad days. Some enjoy baking, gardening, sewing, running, boxing, etc. Some are afraid of hummingbirds, while others are fascinated with penguins. I’ve noticed most love wine and chocolate. I mention this because we often  forget authors are real people, like us. I’ve met authors who have day jobs and still find time to write amazing stories. Social media has been a wonderful resource to learn more about  favorite authors.  Have you connected with an author lately?

Without a doubt, I can truly say that the anecdotes I share, the causes I’ve supported, the prizes I’ve won, the joy and laughter that  fill my days and most specially the friendships I’ve made with readers and authors around the world, would never have been possible if I hadn’t received Kristan Higgins’ reply.  Romance novels have changed my life in tremendous ways, brightened my days, and become my little escape from this busy and hectic life. Just so you know, Kristan and I haven’t met, but I thank her greatly for leading me to so many amazing friends and authors I have met since 2010. ♥

Reading books by these lovely authors has given me hours of entertainment filled with hope, love, laughter and joy.  I hope you participate and experience the joys of romance by connecting with this amazing group of authors and see how they may impact your life as they have mine.

Recommendations:

I have to share this story with you. One time I met a lady at one of those Mall Kiosks.  I told her about so many wonderful authors and books that I’d read and started giving her recommendations, but then she said, “Just tell me which one is the best and I’ll read that one.” You know the deer in the headlights stare? No one had ever asked me that question before! After standing there speechless for a few seconds, I could not pick just one.  I said to her “The best author or book is the one that makes you happy”.

So, here are some authors who have made me VERY happy and I hope they will do the same for you!

(We are doing something special this year with Lorelei, our “token reader.” Lorelei has recommended 31 authors—another month’s worth! We have linked to their sites for their RARM content below, and you can also find one each day on Lorelei’s Facebook page, which is also linked in the sidebar on the right. Thanks Lorelei, for all your great work on this, and your fabulous support of Romance! And readers, enjoy. xo)

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced sheer joy.

I’d say the first time my name appeared in a book!  My name was selected to be a secondary character in Kristan Higgins’  Blue Heron Series! I’m the town BAKER! I danced all around the house and replied to Kristan: “Get out of town!” I was so thrilled! Many authors ask their fans for name or pet suggestions to include them in their stories. And yes, you may get a mention in the acknowledgements. 😀 I can’t tell you how humbled, honored and excited I felt.

Tell us about a place that brings you joy, or is attached to a memory of joy.

My grandmother’s house. The years go by and I’ve moved around a lot since I was a kid, but her house is a place that’s always there. It brings happy memories of growing up, going to college and visiting with my kids. My grandmother is 93 and my kids have the joy of knowing their great-grandmother. We visit every year and cherish new memories every time.

Tell us about a sound that brings you joy.

Nothing brings me more joy than to hear the sound of laughter, especially of babies.  To my kids – if you are reading this, I am not ready to be a grandmother just yet!

What recent book have you read that brought you joy. (Or a book you read in your life that brought you so much joy you’ve never forgotten it.) Why?

Well, It’s not so much the book but the experience. When I used to work as an assistant in elementary, the teacher would let me read to our 3rd grade students during snack time. The kids would sit in a circle around me.  I picked one of Junie B. Jones adventures.  As I read aloud, I found a scene so comical, I started laughing so hard I couldn’t finish the sentence. I’m talking tears and belly spasms.  The kids were staring at me, waiting for me to continue. Then one by one each started bursting into laughter, not because of the story, but at my hysteria , they didn’t know yet what was so funny.  It took me about 10 minutes to compose myself (and the kids), and I managed to finish the sentence.  The bright smiles on those kids faces will forever remain a happy memory.

And for fun, the joy of choice ~

Pick your Chris! Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Chris Rock, Chris Evans or Christopher Plummer (circ. 1964 aka Capt. Von Trapp?) – trying for a little diversity! ;o)

I’m a big fan of Evans and Hemsworth, I mean they’re super heroes, right? But, let’s not underestimate the superpowers a look or a smile can have on a person. So, my first choice would go for Chris Pine in this list—he has the most mesmerizing blue eyes and the cutest smile, sometimes mischievous, too.

However, my best pick for a Chris is actually Christopher Reeve. (Sorry to be a rebel, but….)

See that picture over there to the right, with the snow outside the window? We went LLL & Christopher Reeveskiing in Vermont on Christmas Day, 1985 and I had the privilege of meeting the lovely man himself. We’d actually arrived very early, put our bags to the side to save the table, but when we returned after skiing, it was taken. When I looked at who sat at our table, I realized who it was: Superman. Christopher Reeve.

He was sitting when I approached him, right there, behind me on that bench. But then he rose and…..I was in awe, and amazed, indeed. I asked if he didn’t mind taking a picture. I was so nervous, I forgot to ask for an autograph. At least this pic came out well. No digital back then.

He was so gracious, allowing us taking a picture during the holidays while he was with his family. After everything he went through and all the years of hope and pain, I’ve never forgotten that day and what a true gentlemen and nice person he was. A true real-life hero.

(I was 18, by the way, though I look 14 or something. I’m the one in blue. A wonderful memory. Sigh…)

Who would of thought? Thanks for stopping by, Lynn!

  • Beth K. Vogt

I so enjoyed your reader’s perspective, Lorelei — and how you acknowledged that authors are real women like everyone else. And I had to smile when I saw the cover for Prince Joe — he’s quite the hero, isn’t he?

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Thanks, Beth! And YES, Prince JOE! You must read what happened when it was published over at Suzanne Brockmann’s website!

Writers are readers, too. They have feelings and a life just like us. 😉 Thanks for commenting!

      • Beth K. Vogt

Lorelei: That’s quite a story about Prince Joe’s trip to the bestseller list! 🙂

  • Laura Moore

Beautiful post, Lorelei! Kristan Higgins is the absolutely best person and author to fall in love with. I know because I’m right there with you!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Aw, Thanks Laura! I couldn’t be happier because she’s responsible for connecting us and for introducing me to your great stories! ♥

  • Piper Huguley

Great post! And I agree wholeheartedly with your Chris. Almost makes me want to change mine…:)

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Lol! I think that was the hardest question to answer! They all have their qualities! Thanks for reading my essay, Piper!

  • Great post, Lorelei! Thanks for being a wonderful advocate for the romance genre. I hope you’ll have the opportunity to meet Kristan Higgins in person one of these days (Orlando in 2017?). You’ll love her even more! So many of us have introduced the younger generations of our families to romance. How fun that your daughter was the one to open to doors of romance fiction to you!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Lol! I know! I was just being the cautious mother. I may have even discouraged her to read a book “like that”, paranormal. Turns out I was the one pleading her to read it, but she was so busy with school, that she only managed to read the first book.
As for meeting Kristan in 2017, you bet! I already love the woman more than you know. She’s truly special. And for the record, I loved her books before I ever contacted her. There is always an author who will impact their reader in a special way. Isn’t that true, PJ? Thanks for commenting!

  • Katy Lee

“The best author or book is the one that makes you happy”.

I feel the same way when reading and writing. I want to close a book with a huge smile on my face. Then open it again in the beginning and start again.

Great post, Lorelei! Blessed to know you.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

That quote is one of the most important messages I have for readers. I don’t believe there’s a bad book or author, it’s just not the one for you. I’m so glad for the diversity the romance genre has to offer.

  • Patty Vasquez

I was a huge reader when I was a kid, but fell out of the habit as a busy young adult. Then, following a stressful period of time in my life, I thankfully fell back into the habit. And thankfully, again, I rediscovered the healing nature of a good love story. Interestingly, my path to discovering how wonderful and approachable authors are is similar to yours, Lorelei. The community of romance authors and readers is simply put, amazing!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

I need to make up for what I didn’t read! Lol! It’s true about the healing effect reading a love story brings to us in difficult times, as well as those moments you just want to read something fun because we’re happy!

I truly feel readers would benefit more the reading experience if the learn a little about the person who writes the stories! Thanks, for sharing, Patty!

  • Kim Hansen- Amundsen

What a wonderful stack to books.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Kim. I Love sharing my collection! I hope you discover new ones and see some of your favorites!

  • Karen Mikusak

Awesome giveaway! Would LOVE to win!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

      Good Luck, Karen! ♥

  • What a wonderful post! I love hearing about your journey to romance. It made me smile a lot. You also did a great job of conveying the lives behind the authors. We are just women, as you point out, with an overarching love of happy endings, but our lives have all the usual ups and downs. Thank you for all your support of our genre and us!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Thank you, Nancy! My admiration for your profession is great, you have the gift of delivering great stories which not many of us have. ♥ Can’t wait to read your essay! Smiles, L

  • Linda Henderson

I read a lot of different genres too. My introduction to full out romance stories was the Kathleen Woodiwiss story The Flame and The Flower. I was totally hooked after that. I started reading YA a few years ago and I actually introduced my grown daughter to the Hunger Games, Divergent and Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices. Sometimes we make deals to read different books. She read the Hunger Games and I had to read the Twilight books. She also challenged me to read all the Harry Potter books, I loved them. My sister got me reading historical romance years ago with Barbara Cartland, I read those for years. So I enjoy just about every genre out there.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

That’s wonderful to hear, Linda! I read Lisa Kleypas’ Historical romances after reading her contemporary stories. I figured since I liked her voice, I’d give her historicals a try and fell in love with the genre. I still have to read Kathleen Woodwiss. It’s on my TBR pile. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  • Dawn Anderson

Great post. I liked hearing about your journey to reading romance. Kristan Higgins was the third romance author I ever read and I still love her ,but I’ve never contacted her. I’m happy to hear she’s a genuinely nice person.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Dawn, What are you waiting for? I think there is nothing more rewarding for an author than to hear from their readers about how much you enjoy their books. Also, the satisfaction knowing that you made someone happy by doing so. I’m glad you enjoyed my story. Keep in touch!

  • Texas Book Lover

Your Twilght story is exactly like mine. 6 years later I am still devouring books! Thanks so much!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

  • jcp smith

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

You’re so welcome, JCP! I owe it to my fabulous authors for their contribution! ♥

  • Brenda Hyde

I’m so with you on the Chris love…I love them all but Chris Pratt is one of my favorites. No one thinks of Guardians of the Galaxy as a romance but when he saves Gamora my heart just melts. Sigh. I love the picture– better than a signature!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Sigh! Thank you! I’m so glad it turned out okay. I had to wait days for it to be developed, remember? Now, everything is instant! Thanks for sharing!

  • Debbie Fuller

So glad to hear you didn’t start reading until somewhat recently. I also didn’t start reading about the turn of the century. As an “older” woman who was struggling with depression and didn’t know it, reading romance was what helped to keep me
    sane and hopeful.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

A wonderful and safe remedy! I’m so glad you enjoy them! Thanks for sharing, Debbie!

  • Christyna

Good reminder that authors are (usually) just regular, everyday folks, too. But that can make them the best writers, pulling from the everyday to make such fantastic stories!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Very true. I also want others to remember to be kind and understanding, even if they don’t enjoy a particular author’s writing style. Someone else will! Thanks for commenting, Christyna!

  • Melisa Safchinsky

  • Eileen Aberman-Wells

Hi Lorelei!! I follow you on facebook. I too love Kristan Higgins. I really enjoyed your post. I agree with you that one book you love might not be someone else’s favorite. Although the fact that millionsof copies are bought of certain books, we could be wrong.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Diversity. If there were only a few types of romance genres, the rest would be missing out! I have friends that didn’t like the Twilight series. And I think- how can you not?! So we need to learn to respect each others preferences. What matters is that we read and love romance! ♥ Thanks for reading and sharing here! Good luck with the giveaway!

  • Kareni

I’m another long time romance reader. It was fun to hear how you came to romance reading through your daughter. I’ve probably read more than a few fantasy novels due to my daughter; I’ve yet to convert her to reading romances. Give me time!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

The right moment will come. She may not be ready yet. But when it does, she’ll fall in love with the genre. Wait and see. Romance is to be appreciated. Thanks for sharing, Kareni, and good luck with the giveaway!

  • Sonali Dev

  • I think you story about how your love of books started with your daughter is wonderful! My mother didn’t read when I was growing up. I learned my love of books from my grandmother. My love of romance started didn’t really start until I turned 18, and my grandmother-in-law gave me a copy of A Kingdom of Dreams to read. I loved that book so much that I started devouring historical romance. Thank you for sharing, and for the giveaways!

  • Cindy A

My first romance was Pride and Prejudice. Middle school, I didn’t really know about the author or what she was writing about. I thought it had to do with race relations (you know, the 60’s). Was I ever surprised, amazed and delighted! A romance fan ever since.

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

I’ve watched the movie endless times, and it’s one of my top favorites! In fact I want to watch it again now that you’ve mentioned it! 😀 I still have to read it, some day, when I get a chance! Thanks for sharing!

This is awesome, Lorelei! Nicely written and beautifully said. Kristan H. was my first contact with Romance Writers of America and I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be where I am if it hadn’t been for her. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t have met you! Being a guest on the Jaunty Quills with my debut novel, HEAVEN is for HEROES, and having you win a copy was sheer kismet! Thanks for including me in your recommended list:-)

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Kismet indeed and You later posting about it on your blog, about me recommending it to my library, almost made me cry. How beautiful!
Your books are a wonderful addition to any library! ♥

  • Jolyse Barnett

What a beautiful journey to romance reading, Lorelei! I’m a huge fan of Kristan Higgins too, so I can appreciate your excitement when she responded to your fan mail. I’ve always been too shy to write to most of my favorite authors, but now that I’m surrounded by literary greatness at writing workshops, online, and especially at the RWA National Conference each year, I realize that authors ARE real women (and sometimes men!) like us.
I began writing five years ago because I wanted to give other readers the same joy I’ve gotten from thousands of stories (amazing how they all are different) and am so proud and excited to have joined their ranks with my debut novella last year.

Thanks again for choosing me as one of your authors whose work has brought your life joy. It’s truly been an honor and a pleasure. Happy reading, everyone!! <3

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Thank you, Jolyse! I glad you broke the ice, so to speak. I am thrilled to recommend you, so you can share your beautiful stories with the world! I love to surround myself

It’s one of a kind and another out of the park hit for her I know it!

  • Sue G.

LOL…I could have written this post! I was a big reader in my early years then once college hit I didn’t have time anymore. My oldest was reading the Twilight books CONSTANTLY! I couldn’t figure out what kept her so enthralled so on Halloween night in 2008 I picked up the first one and started reading it while I was passing out candy. I was hooked. I read through all of them in 3 weeks and then needed to read more. I went to the library and found Carly Phillips and was hooked. Now I read about 75 – 100 books a year!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

Ha! Sue, I love it! This is so cool! I’m excited to hear I wasn’t the only one who was swept away by Vampires and Werewolves, but in reality is was the romance! *sigh*! Thanks, for commenting and I hope you visit me often at Lorelei’s Lit Lair on Facebook! We’ll have lots to talk about! ♥

      Thanks for commenting, Pamby!

  • Nicole Potter

I actually found romance novels from a friend, that started as a “dare”. She had told me she was reading a really great book, and when I asked about it, she just mentioned that they weren’t for me and well, that was it. So myself, indignant that I would LOVE the book, ordered it off Amazon. And I got HOOKED! The book that started it all – How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire by Karrelyn Sparks! 🙂

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

I’m SO happy you took the dare! I bet you’re happier now that you did. I’d thank your friend for that. I must check that book out, too! Thanks for commenting and good luck in the giveaway!

  • rebecca moe

The town baker is named after you? That is so awesome–congrats! Picking up a Kristin Higgins book at a library book sale got me started reading romance–love her Blue Heron series! (And all of the rest of her books, really… :))

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

I love hearing that! Kristan Higgins is just awesome! I’m curious to know what made you pick her book? When I had read all of hers, and needed a Kristan Higgins fix, I’d go to her website and read ALL her blog post. seriously. 😉

      • rebecca moe

OMG, I know–me too! I love her blog posts. It’s always a little sad when I get to ones I’ve already read–no more new material 😉

I totally picked it for the cover. It was the old version of Catch of the Day, and the adorable golden puppy on it got me. The blurb on the back sounded good, and I was sold! Then I had to troll the online bookstores, looking for the rest of her backlist ASAP (because they weren’t on digital yet…or at least I didn’t have digital yet, which might as well have been the same thing.)

Now I’ve got print, digital, and audio copies of every one of her books I’m just a little bit of a fan. 🙂

        • Lorelei’s Lit Lair

LOL! I picked her books because of the covers, too! I think the pups did the trick. You know, I think I’ll let you share the BFF title,(biggest fan forever) since you seem as big of a fan as I am 😉 Meet me over at LLL on Facebook! Send a friend request!

I have befriended quite a few authors through Facebook from book parties and events. I really enjoy connecting with them and being a part of their writing process when the need arises. I started reading romances back in high school. I started with Danielle Steel. I do believe that I have read most of her books. You are right. It is not just about the romance. It is the whole story for me. All of the elements that make up the certain experience. Thanks for this giveaway!

    • Lorelei’s Lit Lair
