The Joy of A Perfect Day

I love the beach.  Nothing gives me greater joy than to walk along a sandy beach, feel the ocean breeze and hear the seagulls. So when my beach friend called and invited me downbe afraid to her beach house for the day, it didn’t take much coaxing.  It was a stunning day with not a cloud in the sky and almost no humidity.   Shortly after I arrived, my friend and I were on the beach soaking up the sun as we strolled alone the shoreline.  In the afternoon we visited an open-air farmer’s market, and visited several art shops.  We were having so much fun, she quickly organized an impromptu gathering of her beach friends.  All the ladies agreed and each brought something to share (I found the most delicious chocolate at the market!).  We sat around the table on the deck overlooking the water just as the sun was dimming.

The talk turned to jobs and when I told everyone I was a writer the discussion turned to favorite books.  The reading choices ran the gambit but all the ‘keeper’ books shared similar traits.  Readers confessed their keepers made the time fly.  A keeper insured dinner would be a delivery order of pizza instead of home cooking.  A keepers lured their readers to stay way up past their bedtime until they reached The End.  No mater what the genre, all these gals were swept away from their everyday lives union streetby stories that captured their imaginations.

All readers and, yes writers, want to be enthralled by great characters.  We want to scoot to the edge of our seats, our hearts racing, when the hero and heroine experience tension and turmoil or share their first kiss.  We welcome the chance to laugh, cry, and celebrate a HEA.  We want to care, because in the caring, there is great joy.

As I drove back home, I had not only experienced a stunning day at the beach but I had visited with women who, like me, love great food (and chocolate) and love to read and discuss great stories.    Sun, surf, food, and friends created a day of pure joy.

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced sheer joy.

One of the top ten moments in my life was the CALL.  It’s been sixteen years but I still cover your eyesremember the moment.  It was the first business day of the year in January and the kids (kindergarten and first grade) were back in school after a long, snowy holiday break.  When the phone rang I thought it was the school but it was my agent.  So nice to hear, “You have a sale.”

Tell us about a place that brings you joy, or is attached to a memory of joy.

My place of peace and joy is the beach.  Nothing beats waking up to the sound of waves and the smell of the salt air.  I love taking my morning coffee down to the beach and watch the sunrise.  Those are moments you try to bottle and remember when life gets crazy

Tell us about a sound that brings you joy.

Music brings me great joy.  I always have my phone loaded with songs so I can crank the tunes while I’m at the gym, hiking or driving.  Nothing like a great song to bust any kind of gray mood and generate sheer joy.

What recent book have you read that brought you joy. (Or a book you read in your life that brought you so much joy you’ve never forgotten it.) Why?

My favorite book this week is Daisy Cakes Cookbook.  I just made three different cakes for different occasions in the last couple of weeks and all have been hits.  I love reading her recipes, which remind me so much of my grandmother’s cooking.  She also has  family stories that really speak to my southern roots.  BTW, the carrot cake is to die for!  🙂

And for fun, the joy of choice ~

Pick your Chris! Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Chris Rock, Chris Evans or Christopher Plummer (circ. 1964 aka Capt. Von Trapp?) – trying for a little diversity! ;o)

This one is very tough.  But if I had to chose it would be Chris Pine…I’m a huge friend of Star Trek and I love his redo of Captain Kirk.
