Maya Rodale – Romance, the Realm of Joy

August is Read-A-Romance Month.

I hope you’ll visit every day in August to see what 93+ of your favorite authors have to say about the Joy of Romance.

(Check out the calendar. And follow RARM on Facebook!)

Do you love Romance? Let’s celebrate. xo

Mini moments of JOY, brought to you by romance novels

To the surprise of no one, romance brings joy and pleasure to its readers from the spark DBG-COVER-BIGof excitement when we see those colorful covers to the sigh of happiness when we reach the HEA. Of course, this is why these books so often suffer from snark—in our culture we seem to be suspicious of things that are fun, easy and pleasurable. But that is a story for another day (and one covered in my book Dangerous Books For Girls: The Bad Reputation of Romance Novels Explained). But instead of focusing on the snark, here are just a few of the little moments of joy I get from reading romance novels:

  1. After the wonderfully maddening anticipation of waiting for a new book from a favorite author, that moment when you FINALLY have the book in your hands.
  2. That moment when you settle into your favorite reading spot after a loooong day with a romance novel.
  3. Or that moment of rebellious joy when you say to hell with homework, or the dishes, or the job or whatever and just lose yourself in a romance novel.Rodale Wallflower
  4. While reading the story, there are all those feelings to feel…good, bad, sexy, funny, scary, sad and happy all at the same time…which I allow myself to fully feel because I know it will end well.
  5. And then there’s the HEA joy, that moment when All Is Right In The World or at least that fictional world.
  6. And then there is the joy of sharing a beloved book with a friend and getting to relieve the story when you chatter and squee all about it.

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment in your life when you experienced sheer joy.

All the time! A good meal with great friends, just being around my loved ones, or looking at “adorbsable” pictures like these on Pinterest.

Tell us about a place that brings you joy, or is attached to a memory of joy.

My bed. I trust that I need not explain this to anyone.

Tell us about a sound that brings you joy.

As long as it’s not the sound of jackhammers or sirens, I’m probably happy with it.

What recent book have you read that brought you joy. (Or a book you read in your life that brought you so much joy you’ve never forgotten it.) Why?

No book has ever delighted me quite like Eloise at the Plaza.

And for fun, the joy of choice ~

Pick your Chris! Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Chris Pratt, Chris Rock, Chris Evans or Christopher Plummer (circ. 1964 aka Capt. Von Trapp?) – trying for a little diversity! ;o)

Maya is generously offering one signed copy of What A Wallflower Wants, US only (apologies to international friends). xo

Another unique kind of joy is discovering a new romance author. Finding an author whose particular style of writing just clicks with your own reading “personality” is almost as much fun as discovering a new fictional boyfriend!
