I #loveromance, and I expect every person in the world to love this genre too.

[Manage expectations, Cole.] Okay, let’s try this:

I want everyone in the world who might love the romance genre to give it a chance.

Unfortunately, so many readers never will because of preconceived notions. Before you picked up your first romance novel, did you have them?

I did.

Then one day, when I was between science fiction and horror novels and desperate for something new to read, I stumbled upon A Rose in Winter, by Kathleen Woodiwiss.

At the risk of sounding dramatic—actually, let’s assume that risk because this is really freaking dramatic—the entire course of my life changed.

I often think with a shudder, What if I’d never picked up that book?

And that makes me wonder how many folks right now are missing out on their own life – changing The-Playerromance novel. How many would become avid readers or booksellers or librarians or writers or genre advocates?

How many would simply become . . . happier?

Over the sixteen years I’ve been writing romance, I’ve come across a number of genre detractors. Early in my career, I would go toe-to-toe with them. Eventually, I gave up trying to change minds, but these days, I’ve got a new outlook. . . .

Imagine if the romance genre were a person.

Wouldn’t you feel bad for her?

Romance is intelligent, but those detractors consider her brainless. Though she’s strong and capable, they call her weak and incompetent. She empowers, but she’s viewed as a bad influence. She gets passed over for promotions and awards, even though the decision makers refuse to look at her work.

Romance’s critics claim her statements all sound alike—but they never listen to a word she says.

From now on, I’m going to stick up for Romance at every opportunity. I’m going to buy Romance a drink, because, damn, she’s had a hard slog. I’m going to tell her it’s getting better, little by little.

I’m going to defend Romance as loyally as I would any of my friends—because I love the hell out of that Arcana Risingremarkable woman.

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment in your life when you felt romance surrounding you.

I felt romance surrounding me while my husband Swede and I were working on my first self-published title, ColeThePlayerThe Player. He stepped up to the plate and took care of everything—formatting, cover, uploads, etc.—allowing me to write without interruptions. Which is knightly behavior in my mind. I legit sighed over him.

Then came the moment when I held The Player in my hands for the first time. Right as I was about to peek inside, Swede told me, “I put a surprise for you in the published book.”

Record-needle scratch. Oh. *#&@.

Pardon? [Choking] S-surprise?? [Must to vomit now] Copies had already shipped, yet he’d gone behind the scenes and added something to a book I had relentlessly micro-edited and polished.

With shaking hands, I opened the cover. . . .

I burst out laughing. On the Valkyrie Press title page, he’d added location names, all from my Immortals After Dark series—three of which are fictional demon and vampire settings.

In my mind, his little addition was a playful wink and an adorably sexy grin. [another legit sigh]

Tell us about someone special in your life (other than your partner) with whom you share romance.

I shared romance with every author on the Belles-on-Wheels book tour in May 2014. Two thousand miles, a bus-load of women, seven cities, five jam-packed days. We lived books. We laughed. We visited with readers and bloggers and booksellers who loved romance. Now we all share those wonderful memories.

Who is your (or a) favorite romantic couple?

In books? I’m going to go old school and say Lizzie and Darcy, with their sublime push/pull.

Tell us about your dream date.

Swede and I have just finished our latest deadlines and get to breathe a bit. We grab the mutts and head to the beach for an afternoon. As the sun goes down, we eat boiled shrimp and laugh as the dogs chase waves.

I was so excited to see your post today. I have loved the Immortals After Dark since day one. And I have introduced them and the Player series to every friend, co-worker and anyone who would stand still for a few minutes to listen. Keep writing and I look forward to meeting you at NOLA StoryCon!

  • Alex

Hi from Germany! Kresley Cole was one of my first romance authors I read 7 years ago. Since then I read every book of her and she is one of my favorite authors. Keep writing 🙂

  • Ann Mettert

I love the story of your husband adding something to the book. I’d have been afraid to look. 😉

  • Kareni

Thanks for a lovely post, Ms. Cole. If you’re buying Romance a drink, I’ll give her a box of truffles. And thank you, too, for the pleasure your books have brought me. Happy writing!

  • cheryl c.

I adore Lizzie and Darcy too!

  • Julie

That man of yours sounds like a keeper! ♥

  • catslady

I always was a reader but after picking up The Flame and the Flower, I was totally hooked on romance books. I still will read other books but romances are the icing on the cake!!!

  • Mel

I grew up in a house with parents that were avid readers. My dad read horror, while my mom read romance. I grew to love romance at a very young age and while I don’t remember the title of the first romance book I read, I’m pretty sure it was written by Danielle Steele. My mother owns every book that woman has ever written.

These days, my love affair with romance is more sub-genre. Paranormal romance is my go-to and if I want something a little dirtier and/or edgier, I go the erotic romance route.

I’ve never once been ashamed to say that I’m a romance reader and I never will be. Romance has been an escape from my life and I’m thankful for it everyday. In all honesty, I think the world would be a better place if more people would give it a chance.

  • May

Oh my… your husband is a keeper! 🙂 Great story!

  • Mary McCoy

I love Swede’s addition to the title page!

  • Tiffany Mosley

I was a horrible reader in school. I was placed in a remedial reading class. My mother and my new reading teacher showed me books with people in them who looked like me (young black girl) in them and my love of reading grew from there. Romance books were silly love stories that meant nothing to me until I was a divorced single mom at 27. The fight for your woman, lover her unconditionally, and change your world for her stories pulled me in and will never let me go.

  • LisaVH

I love love the IAD series!!

  • Patty Vasquez

This week at work I had two different friends tell me they really appreciated the romance books I’ve mentioned on my fb page. We’re teachers; we agreed that romance novels are the perfect counter to our stressful jobs. I was thrilled to discover coworkers who’d seen the light!

  • Eileen Aberman Wells

I too think that Lizzy and Darcy are the perfect couple!! Roxanne St. Claire writes wonderful books. Thank you for your post.

  • Grace Soh

Singapore fan here. Kresley Cole is the reason why I’m hooked to Romance books. When I first discovered the Immortals After Dark series, I immediately fall in love with it. I went through 1 book per day and finished it in less than 2 weeks. I love the intensity between characters and the hurdles they have to went through. Since then, I have read a lot of romance novels but it all fall short compared to her writing. Can’t wait for Shadow’s Seduction and Wicked Abyss.

The Arcana Chronicles is a one of a kind apocalyptic book. Every book in the series provide some major jaw dropping revelation. One will never gets bored reading this series. The bombshell on the last chapter of Arcana Rising is killing me! With the history Evie and Aric shared, I hope they end up together. #TeamAric

As for the Game Makers series, The Player is my favourite. So far I have read the book twice. Dmitri played the con well. I love how he learnt everything about Victoria, played her own game and bet her at it. He did everything in his power to make her his. I noticed the IAD locations when I open the book too, it was well played ;). Now if only I could have a fictional character of my own…

  • Lacey T

I ADORE KC’s Game Maker series! I still need to read her PNR books but I have no doubt they’re just as amazing!

  • Kristine R

I loved Erienne and Lord Saxton in A Rose in Winter by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss and the Beauty and the Beast theme. She was one of my first historical romance authors I read. Lothaire will always have my heart in the IAD series.
The Master with Maksimilian is smoking hot on the pages like all of your novels. It tied with Lothaire as being my favorite. It was great learning a bit more about you. Your fan from Trinidad (International)

  • Amaya

My entry into romances hadn’t been a straight path. I first stumbled upon them at 14 but it wasn’t until a few years later that a friend introduced me to historical romances (Lisa Kleypas, Sherry Thomas) that I finally jumped onto the bandwagon.
Romances has helped me through many rough patches and still does. I couldn’t imagine where I’d be without it and it definitely is remarkable. Will check out your books and recommendations so thank you for your lovely post! – Malaysia

  • Sue G.

I’ve love romance books since my pre-teen years and have never looked back. I love the happy emotions you feel when you are done with a book.

  • Shannon Yiannaki

I can probably open my own bookstore with all the books I have. I love Kresley and own every single one of her books, she is an amazing writer and has only gotten better as the years have gone on.

  • I LOVE all of Cole’s books. I’ve read/listen to them all except for her older historicals but I have them on my bookshelf to read at some point.

  • Angie Hockman

Love, love, love all of Kresley Cole’s books. She could write about the history of toilet paper and I’d read it. Fabulous article & interview!

  • Diana Michelle Tidlund

love all of Kresley’s books that ive read so far….. can’t wait for the next one…

  • Alex

Adding the IAD place names under Valkyrie Press…it’s that real life romance stuff that really, really gets me, too! It would have been cool to include Pandemonia…since I’m guessing we’ll get to return their in future books?

  • Gladys Nason

Been a romance fan since I was twelve years old and began reading my Mom’s Barbara Cartland books. Now I am a huge fan of Kersey Cole, Nora
Roberts, Larissa Ione and Lauren Dane to name a few. I am always eagerly
awaiting the next new book to come out.

  • Heidi

I didn’t even know the paranormal romance genre existed. I won a book lot on an ebay auction thst had one of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter books in it. That was all she wrote. I was addicted. From there it was Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series and even some old achool Elaine Bergstrom, then it anowballed. I have a suitcase of romance books I have yet to read but refuse.to get rid of because “I’ll get there someday!” (It’s been at least 4 years since I packed them up…)

  • KV

That’s awesome how your husband surprised you.

  • Nicole Potter
