Welcome to the 5th Annual Read-A-Romance Month!

While I read romance all year long, August is the month we celebrate this awesome genre! Come back every day to read all three “Power of Romance” posts. Check out the full calendar of authors here. You can also find links to the last four years’ posts from the boxes in the sidebar, and if you’d like, you can follow RARM on Facebook.

Happy August!

Creating Love Every Day

The Power of Romance can stay with you for years after you’ve finished a book. Think about that great romance with Elizabeth and Darcy and no matter how many times you read it or see it, the power of that relationship never fails to sweep you off your feet. I discovered the power or romance by reading boxes of books my grandma and mom had. I believe I was twelve the first time I read one. There were pirates involved, and at that time, I was more interested in the pirates than the romances.

The first time one of those stories really stuck with me was one of Victoria Holt’s (the original) gothic romances. I’m sure it was the scariness of what was happening more than anything else. At thirteen, I lived for ghost stories. I had to read more and more. I fell in love with the genre at an early age, and though my tastes for everything else has changed through the years, I still love it.

It never dawned on me that years later I might be writing romance. Even when I started writing fiction, that hadn’t been the plan. It was at the suggestion of my first agent that I had more romance to my story, and that’s how this romance writer was born. I’m a girl who loves a happy ending. I love putting characters together, like Hawk and Amy in “All I Want is You,” that you’d never imagine together. I love my heroes strong and my heroines able to go toe-to-toe with them. I now live for creating those happily ever afters.

I’m so grateful for romance authors. People who create love every day and share it with the world. That’s the power of romance.

Candace recommends:

Jodi Thomas  –  jodithomas.com   –   @Amazon

whether she’s writing historical or contemporary there are aways unforgettable characters.

Gena Showalter   –  genashowalter.com  –  @Amazon

has written some of my favorite heroes ever created.

Jill Monroe   –  jillmonroe.com  –  @Amazon

never fails to make laugh and she’s so good with the sex romance.

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment when you felt or were aware of the power of romance.

It was those early Victoria Holt novels and discovering Pride and Prejudice as a teen. Mr. Darcy and I was done. I remember HATING him so much at the beginning of that book and by the end, SWOON.

Tell us about an object that has powerful memories for you.

It’s probably cheesy, but my wedding ring. It reminds me of the promises I’ve made and love that has become unconditional.

Tell us about a word that has power for you.

Dreams. I love that word. You are only bound by the limits of your imagination when it comes to achieving your dreams.

Tell us about a powerful book you read this year (or one that’s so powerful you’ve never forgotten it).

It’s always the last book I read. I love anything by Jill Shalvis. And I’ve been reading the Midnight, Texas series by Charlaine Harris.

Tell us about a person who’s had a powerful influence on your life.

When it comes to writing, Jodi Thomas was one of my first mentors. She introduced me to my agent. Introduced my agent to the woman who would become my editor. She’s such a kind-hearted, loving human. When I grow up, I’d like to be just like her.

  • cheryl c.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites too.

    • Candace Havens

It’s one of those books that just stays with you for the rest of your life. 🙂

  • Anna

I remember reading Pride and Prejudice for the first time and thinking… What the hell is up with this Darcy guy?? He’s such a jerk! And then by the end, I was as in love with him as Elizabeth. *sigh*

    • Candace Havens

Don’t you think that’s one of the things that makes that book so memorable? I almost quit reading because I hated him so much, but I loved Elizabeth. And then, the magic happened. 🙂

  • Dawn Anderson

What is it about Mr. Darcy that makes us all fall in love?❤ Loved your post!

    • Candace Havens

Best hero, except for Atticus Finch but To Kill A Mockingbird isn’t a romance, EVER. 🙂

The King of the Castle is the Victoria Holt novel that I will always remember. The dark, brooding comte, and the heroine whose first name was Dallas. The cover of the particular edition of the book I had is seared into my memory!

Victoria Holt – one of the very first mysteries I read, when I was allowed to go to the library and choose anything I wanted!
