Colleen Coble – Choosing Love

Hi friends!

Welcome to the 5th Annual Read-A-Romance Month!

While I read romance all year long, August is the month we celebrate this awesome genre!  Come back every day to read all three “Power of Romance” posts. Check out the full calendar of authors here. The Power of Choosing to Love

I’ve always been a romantic at heart. Back in my teen years I swooned over Barnabas in Dark Shadows (I know that’s weird and also dates me, but what can I say?) :o) I married at nineteen and have been married to the same wonderful guy for nearly forty-six years. Being a romantic has been instrumental in that long happy marriage!

I have always taken romance a bit for granted since my husband is also a romantic, but I recently had a wakeup call when I received an email from a reader. They’d just read one of my books. All four books in my Lonestar series have the same marriage of convenience underpinning, and the reader realized that love is a choice. She let me know she was choosing to love her husband all over again and was going to try again in her marriage. Whoohoo! I love being able to be part of making people think about life and relationships.

Many people think of love as a feeling—and it is of course—but it’s much more than that. We don’t always feel like being loving. The house is a mess, the kids are snarking at each other, and you feel like giving as good as you’re getting from everyone else. But it’s those times when we need to stop and realize that we can choose to love even when we don’t feel like it. That decision can carry us through the bad times that always come.

Romance novels aren’t frivolous. There is nothing more important than choosing to love someone and being an agent of change in the world that way. Thinking of someone else’s happiness first could bring deep and lasting changes to our lives—and to the world.

Romance always has an edge of optimism to it because we know there’s going to be a happily ever after. Life isn’t always that way, but I like looking at the world through a romantic prism because it helps me see the good even when bad things happen. I know things will eventually turn out fine even if that happy-ever-after finale has to wait until heaven to materialize.

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment when you felt or were aware of the power of romance.

Just this week I was up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (where the book was set) with my family for a launch party for Beneath Copper Falls. It was a very busy week with so much to do. My husband Dave pitched in quietly the way he always does and took much of the burden off me and our hostess because that’s what he does. He’s not flashy about it and doesn’t do things for praise but just because he loves me. It doesn’t sound like all that much of a romantic moment, but it was. When you find the perfect mate who thinks of your needs over his own, it’s about the most romantic thing there is in life!

Tell us about an object that has powerful memories for you.

My husband drove a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner when we met. You rarely see them today, but when I’m lucky enough to spot one at a car show or driving down the road, I’m immediately transported back to the first time I heard that powerful engine roar down the road toward my house, and I remember our first love all over again.

Tell us about a word that has power for you.

Forgiveness is the most powerful word in the world. Without it none of us could survive the hurts that come our way. When we let go and forgive, we can allow relationships to flourish and grow.

Tell us about a powerful book you read this year (or one that’s so powerful you’ve never forgotten it).

The Help was a life-changing book. I live in small town Indiana and have never truly understood what Black Americans have gone through and still go through.

Tell us about a person who’s had a powerful influence on your life.

Diann Hunt was a fellow author and sister-of-the-heart. She exhibited tremendous faith and courage in the face of ovarian cancer—but even more than that—she showed me how to live a life of love and care for others. I think about her and all she taught me every day. To say she had a lasting impression on my life is an understatement.

This book is on my wish list. I love the story about the Roadrunner. I didn’t meet my husband until our 30s but he had a 1968 torino that he had had since High school. We used to go to car shows while we were dating. We had to sell it a few years ago during a move. I feel the same way every time I see one now though.

    • ColleenCoble

Sad to lose it, isn’t it!?

  • Barbara

Coleen, I love your books, but oh my goodness, a Roadrunner? Why haven’t you done a book on classic car lovers? 😉 my “engagement ring” was a 1968 Chevelle with a 396 engine. Good thing gas was only $1 a gallon or under!

    • ColleenCoble

I should do that, Barbara! LOL

  • Dawn Nicol

I have read many of your books and some of them more than once (like Lonestar, Hawaii, Alaskan and Without a Trace series). Love your writing and how you combine suspense with romance! 🙂

    • ColleenCoble

      Thanks so much, Dawn!

  • Lynn Troskey Schneemann

I am very excited to read this book! I like so many others have read just about all of your books. Keep them coming.

Forgiveness is a powerful word. It can be very freeing, but it takes great strength to be able to do it.

    • ColleenCoble

      Yes it does, Cheryl!

  • Kelly Jetzer

Your relationship with your husband sounds wonderful! Congrats on 46 years together.

    • ColleenCoble

      Thanks, Kelly!

  • Sue G.

I’m married to a Dave and he is the same way. Quiet in the background but just does things that he sees that needs to be done! He’s very shy so he won’t talk to many people until he really knows them, but then, you can’t shut him up! 😉

    • ColleenCoble

      Same with mine!

  • Michele H.

I had to laugh at your reference to Dark Shadows- it re-ran on cable when I was in my 20’s. I look back at the books I have from that time- they’re mostly angsty Paranormal romance that captured the same vibe DS had.

    • ColleenCoble

I was a huge fan! LOL

  • Jamie Lloyd

I have read about 10 of your books over the last couple of months. Romance with a twist of mystery. My favorite kind of books!

    • ColleenCoble

      Yay! 🙂

  • Norma Doles

    • ColleenCoble

      Aw, thanks, Norma!

  • Lisa Cross

There are several of you ladies I enjoy reading. You take me away to an time long ago. Thank you!

    • ColleenCoble

      Thanks, Lisa!

  • Cat Brown

    • ColleenCoble

Yay, my buddy Cat showed up. 🙂

  • Faye Wasson

I remember watching “Dark Shadows” in high school, but I could only watch it in the daytime! LOL

    • ColleenCoble

Oh I loved it so much! LOL

  • catslady

    • ColleenCoble

      Hope you enjoy them!

  • rebecca moe

Love is a choice–so true! Thank you for sharing 🙂

    • ColleenCoble

      Thanks for stopping by, Rebecca!

  • Patty Vasquez

One of the most important reasons I read romance is because at the end of a tough day, the romance in a good story helps to fill my loving cup back up. Knowing that an author has given her characters the strength, hope, and faith to fulfill the promise of a loving relationship never fails to put me back into a better place.

    • ColleenCoble

      I’m with you, Patty!

  • Susanne Mincer

    Love Colleen’s books! 🙂

    • ColleenCoble

      Thanks, Susanne!

  • Pamby50

  • MaryC

You are fortunate in having such a supportive spouse.

  • Ellen

Your husband sounds like a real sweetheart. I like your point about choosing to love. It can be hard, but so worth it.

  • Maryann

I have read one of Colleen’s young adult books and these books look like great reads. My sister and I always watched Dark Shadows. Your husband seems like a great guy. Love is a choice – so true!

  • Nicole Marie

Great post, thanks for sharing your story! I can only imagine being married for 46 years, how wonderful for you and your husband.

  • Glenda

” He’s not flashy about it and doesn’t do things for praise but just because he loves me. It doesn’t sound like all that much of a romantic moment, but it was. ”
