Karen Hawkins – Our Reason For Being

Hi friends!

Welcome to the 5th Annual Read-A-Romance Month!

While I read romance all year long, August is the month we celebrate this awesome genre! Come back every day to read all three “Power of Romance” posts. Check out the full calendar of authors here. You can also find links to the last four years’ posts from the boxes in the sidebar, and if you’d like, you can follow RARM on Facebook.

Happy August!

#LoveRomance #ThePowerOfRomance

A Grand Tradition of Romance

Ah, the Power of Romance! If there’s one emotion that should be a superpower, it’s love. Love has launched a thousand ships, and saved the lives of more people than we can count. It has given strength to the weak, warmth to the cold, and hope to the hopeless.

More than that, love is our reason for being – whether it is to love a spouse or a child or a close friend, love is why we are. That’s why romance as genre is forever. Romance was featured in the songs and stories of medieval courts, in the paintings and poems of the Romantic Era, and in literature across the ages.

So when you grab that romance novel and settle in for a blissful few hours, realize this – you are merely following in the footsteps of millions of people before you. Love is who we are, and romance is how we express it. You, as a reader, should enjoy every book, every page, every word!

Questions for the Author:

Tell us about a moment when you felt or were aware of the power of romance.

I got divorced after 15 years of marriage which began a very long, and very painful year. I won’t go into the details, but I was emotionally wrecked and had so much trouble being positive. But one day, as I was moving my things into my new place, I came across an old Georgette Heyer book ARABELLA. I love her books. In fact, she is the one who introduced me to historical romance.

I put aside my packing, sat down, and read the whole book. To my surprise, I sighed AND grinned in all of the right places. And when I finished, those smiles and sighs lingered. The book was such a RELIEF — it let me forget about my own tragedy for a while, and let me live in someone else’s ordered, well-mannered life. Better yet, it reminded them that there was still love out there and while I was down right now, I was far from out.

A short time later, I met a really sexy cop named — well, now I just call him ‘husband.’ 🙂 Romance is strong medicine.

Tell us about an object that has powerful memories for you.

That would be my wedding ring. My husband, Cap’n Hot Cop, designed it on the back of a napkin while we were having dinner at our favorite place and then had it made by a local jeweler. It’s beautiful, and has a unique Art Deco look, which we both love. But more than that, he put so much thought into it. It’s not about the jewels (which are nice, don’t get me wrong), but the effort he went to make the ring something that was uniquely OURS.

Tell us about a word that has power for you.

For me, the word that has the most power is the word “yes.” I’ve had the most fun, found the best friends, and enjoyed the best adventures from saying the short, simple word “YES.” It’s so easy to hang onto the status quo and never change anything, but change is invigorating. It’s enlivening. And it’s definitely empowering.

Tell us about a powerful book you read this year (or one that’s so powerful you’ve never forgotten it).

Wow. The most powerful . . . that’s a tough one. This year, it was a biography of Abigail Adams – Abigail Adams: A Life by Woody Holton . I’m a huge biography fan and read them all of the time for research. She was such a fascinating woman. Her political mindset, her belief in family, her desire to be more — I’ve never read a biography where I was left wanting to meet someone quite so much.

Tell us about a person who’s had a powerful influence on your life.

One of the people who’ve had the most powerful influence on my life is my writing friend Suzanne Enoch. She’s taught me many things, not the least of which is how a positive approach to life will always pay you back in sunshine. She’s an amazing writer, and a lovely person in general. Whenever I have a problem, personal or professional, she always has the very best advice. We all need girlfriends like that.

New York Times and USA Today best-selling romance author Karen Hawkins was teaching political science at a small college while working on her PhD in Political Science when she sold her first book. She knew she couldn’t both fulfill a publishing contract AND a rigorous PhD program (and raise two small children), so she made the only decision possible – she dropped out of her program and burned her stats book on the front lawn while dancing madly around the flames.

Now, thirty books, numerous awards, and many best-seller lists later, when not researching Regency-era customs or looking at pictures of sexy men in kilts for ‘inspiration,’ Karen writes full-time from her home in the gorgeous Berkshires in Massachusetts.
