When I was told that this month’s theme was #LoveRomance, I was somewhat at a loss on what to write. You see, I am one of the least romantic women you will ever meet in real life. I may write a romantic, swoony hero, but in all honesty I tend to suck at real life romance. No, seriously.
I needed to take a step back and really think about what romance means to me, and you know what? It’s not that I dislike romance. I just like a different kind of romance. A more low-key, “hey, let’s hang out and eat good food and have good conversation” kind of romance. Here are some ideas of romance that are more likely to gain my attention:
- Fancy dates with movement restricting undergarments and heels that hurt my feet? No thank you! Put me in a pair of jeans, a jersey, and my Converse, and let’s hit a game! Football, hockey, golf; you name it, and I’m there!
- Flowers? They’re pretty, but you know what? They die. You know what doesn’t die? Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
- Sure fire way to my heart? Compassion for others. Help a stranger, give $5 to someone in need, you get the point.
- Another surefire way to my heart? C-A-K-E.
- I consider myself a bit of a foodie. You know how they say a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach? Yeah, I’m totally on board with that.
I may not be one for grand, sweeping gestures of romance, but I can appreciate the heartfelt sentiment behind them. While I’m not a fan of “traditional” romance, I am a huge fan of love. No matter who you are, love fully and fiercely, whether that means saying it with words or writing it across the sky.

Questions for the Author:
Tell us about a moment in your life when you felt romance surrounding you.
One of the most romantic moments I’ve ever had was my wedding. My husband Shawn and I went to St. John’s and got married on a cliffside overlooking the blue waters with just our parents. Then after, we had a private dinner in an abandoned sugar mill ruin, so it was just crumbling walls and candlelight. It was very laidback but seriously romantic.
Honestly, I’ve got a few special someone’s I share romance with, and that would be my beta readers Janett, Darlene, Beth and Karen, along with my PA Lisa. All five ladies not only read and critique my work as I’m writing it a few chapters at a time, but they are sort of my cheerleaders. We share funny stories and photos of hot guys, and a lot of other little things that all go toward romance. These ladies are special because honestly, no one close to me is a romance reader. Not even my best friend, so these are the ladies I share romance with.
Do you have a place in the world or a sound that you equate with romance?
I’ve been to a lot of romantic places in the world (see wedding above) but my favorite was driving The Romantic Road in Germany with my husband.
Who is your (or a) favorite romantic couple?
Hands down… President and First Lady Obama. I think they’re huge role models that you can have the hardest, most stressful job in the world, but still have romance for each other. You see it with them all the time.
Tell us about your dream date.
Going to a football game (preferably the Steelers or the Buckeyes) on a chilly fall day and eating hot dogs and drinking beer while rooting my team on.

Since the release of her debut contemporary romance novel, Off Sides, in January 2013, Sawyer Bennett has released more than 30 books and has been featured on both the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists on multiple occasions.
A reformed trial lawyer from North Carolina, Sawyer uses real life experience to create relatable, sexy stories that appeal to a wide array of readers. From new adult to erotic contemporary romance, Sawyer writes something for just about everyone.
Sawyer likes her Bloody Mary’s strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active toddler, as well as full-time servant to two adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or a combination of the two.
