Molly Harper – Give Me More, Give Me More!

August 2, 2020 Leave a Comment

On Day 2 of #RARM20, I’m talking books I’ve binged this year. (You can read a bit more about this in today’s Suzanne Brockmann – Bingeworthy! and Kristan Higgins – Must Read posts.)

I just love Molly Harper. It took me a while to find her, because I’m not a huge paranormal fan. But then I discovered her Southern Eclectic series and that was my first Molly Harper binge session. Then I dipped my toes into the Mystic Bayou series that was part of the Audible Escape package, and they were wonderful….

Then a friendly Audible PR rep asked me if I’d read the Half Moon Hollow series and I admitted I hadn’t and she tossed me a few codes (thank you, Audible, thank you!), and okay, I admit it, I’m hooked. (I haven’t even mentioned the Bluegrass series, which is also wonderful………)

The woman is prolific, for the good and the bad. I don’t own all the titles, though I figure someday I will. There is something incredibly delightful about Harper’s Southern sass and warm-hearted snark. Her heroines (especially) are quirky and vulnerable, and we love the heroes to the bottom of our toes mainly because they love those snarky, wounded ladies exactly as they are. In fact, they love them because they are exactly who they are.

All the things the heroines think of as problematic – things they feel have repelled men in their pasts – are the very things these men, these men who are perfect for our smart, resourceful heroines, particularly love about them.

And isn’t that the most satisfying thing? (Of course these guys are gorgeous, smart and sexy too, which makes it all the more gratifying that they’re perfect for their ladies!) To add a little frosting to the cake, Harper writes the best circles of friends, too. Women who know they can depend on each other and are always there with pure Southern comfort, in whatever form is necessary.

Beyond that, though, Harper is a phenomenal writer with a fabulous, inimitable voice – that inexplicable thing that you know when you see, especially when it’s so exquisite and pitch perfect.

Plus her world-building is so entertaining and creative, and the humor is entwined in every facet of the storytelling: word phrasing, situations, snark, story elements, banter….

Basically the books are just sheer, delightful fun.

If you’re an audio type, consider giving her books a listen. Narrator Amanda Ronconi is the perfect voice for MH’s voice, and the collaboration is sublime. (Plus there a bunch of her books included in the *Audible Escape package.)

You can see a list of all her titles on her website here. I haven’t read one book that didn’t make me laugh out loud or resist putting it down. She’s been a go-to author this year, and I am so grateful to have escaped some of the 2020 craziness through Molly Harper’s wonderful books.

Check out Molly Harper’s books @Amazon
She has a few books and novellas strategically priced. MY BLUEGRASS BABY is currently only $1.99 for Kindle. If you like the voice and the humor, you’ll like all of her books.

(This review is part of Read-A-Romance Month. Hope you’ll come back every day to check out my book recommendations. You can find the calendar here. Also check out The Romance of Reading, a Facebook “book club” where we’ll have great authors guest hosting every week.)

Enjoy!

* The Audible Escape package offers thousands of romance titles (and some women’s fiction) at a reasonable monthly fee of just under $7.

Roselle Lim – The Delights of Magic, Paris & Tea

August 30, 2020

Lim’s writing is graceful and accomplished, allowing her to tell a layered, imaginative, entrancing tale with the lyricism and radiance it deserves.

Jenn McKinlay – Paris Books Are Always A Good Idea

August 30, 2020

This book was a great mix of deeper themes like extended grief and reclaiming one’s true self when life has become all work and no joy, held in tension with elements like reconnecting with old loves and finding them completely different than the hazy version of a decade ago.

Albertalli/Saeed – Say Yes to Yes, No, Maybe So

August 29, 2020

Today’s theme is: Some Awesome YA! Be sure to check out the posts on Sandhya Menon & Stephanie Perkins too! YES, NO, MAYBE SO is a warm, funny, engaging story, but it deals with so many issues in ways that are inspiring and uplifting, even as it reflects realistic disappointments and setbacks, that it is […]
