There’s something altogether comforting about Agatha Christie. She writes a really taut mystery novel that you know is going to end well. She slips clues in sideways, and in the end, when the great reveal has run its course, you generally know you missed it when it was right in front of you, but you don’t mind because Poirot has used his little grey cells, or Miss Marple has twinkled her way to the answer with a sly smile and her roses intact, and once again, all is right with the world.
And if, like me, you also read a lot of Agatha Christie because there was quite often more than the tiniest bit of romance, then you know that she could wiggle those subplots in with the best of them.
I wrote a post about my favorite Agatha Christie character, Harley Quin, last year, and also mentioned Tommy & Tuppence, AC’s only married detectives.
But many of Christie’s stories and novels have a romantic subplot. Poirot considers himself a romantic, and Miss Marple is always up for nudging romance along, especially when she sees men attracted to the wrong women (in her humble opinion, of course, but when is Miss Marple ever wrong?!)
I especially love her short stories, and I’ve been lucky enough to receive audio copies of a couple of collections that HarperAudio has produced in the last year, two of which are especially great for summer!
MURDER UNDER THE SUN which released last year and is narrated by Hugh Fraser (BBC’s Mr. Hastings to Davis Suchet’s inimitable Poirot)
Get away from it all with this selection of mid-summer murders by Agatha Christie, read by television’s Captain Hastings, the actor and novelist Hugh Fraser!
Summer. Holiday season. A time for rest and relaxation. But murder can strike anywhere, as this selection of an ‘unlucky thirteen’ mysteries by Agatha Christie proves.
Join Hercule Poirot, Christopher Parker Pyne, Harley Quin and James Bond on this special holiday-themed collection, and take a dip into these short stories, perfect for killing time on the beach, by the pool – or at home, when planning to get away from it all.
Then this summer, they released MURDER IN PARADISE, narrated by Suchet himself!
Escape from isolation and broaden your horizons with this audio collection of murder mysteries by Agatha Christie, read by David Suchet, television’s iconic Poirot for more than two decades.
Train journeys through rolling countryside and cruises across the open ocean might sound like paradise, but when murder strikes mid-journey, they’re anything but. Even on vacation, tensions can bubble beneath the surface, and when the end of the line leads to murder, everyone’s a suspect.
I loved MURDER UNDER THE SUN and can’t wait to listen to MURDER IN PARADISE (I’m a little busy catching up on the books by our RARM page hosts, but it’s top of my list when I’ve finished them all!)
You can also get all of the Harley Quin short stories on audio (also narrated by Hugh Fraser). If you haven’t met those yet, I highly recommend them. They’re so fun!
