Caridad Pineiro – Sharing The Love & The Magic
Some of my fondest memories are of summers with my hoard of books to read that I either got from a friendly visit from the bookmobile or a trip to our local library. When I was younger it was the magic of Dr. Seuss books with their colorful pages and rhyme. As I got older, I discovered the mystical and mysterious countryside and manors of the Brontë sisters. I absorbed all that passion and dark romanticism and was transported to the moors and ruins in England. I checked Wuthering Heights of the library so many times that at one point the librarian told me I couldn’t take it out anymore and suggested other novels I might like to read. Those books opened new worlds to me that I would otherwise not be able to explore and as time went on, I realized that I could do the same for other readers by writing.
Whenever I put pen to paper, I think about the people, places, and things that I love and how I can share them with others. That’s the magic of books! We can experience so many new things within the pages of a book.
I hope I never stop loving that experience, both as a reader and a writer.

2019 RARM Questions:
Tell us about a time in your life that felt magical to you.
One of the most magical times in my life was an anniversary trip to Paris with my husband. It was so out of the ordinary for us and the time we spent there, just walking the streets and seeing the sights was absolutely amazing. It was a wonderful time to rekindle the happiness we’d first experienced as newlyweds and to think about what our future would be now that we had a house and family. It was so nice to spend time together as well as experience a different culture and lots of ham hocks since it seemed every dish we ordered had that ingredient! LOL! But despite that, or because of that, it was also a time filled with lots of laughter and friendship, two things that have kept us going over the many years of marriage.
Tell us about a book that was magical for you.
It’s so tough to choose only one book that has been magical for me. It’s like choosing a favorite child and I always say that’s the reason I decided to only have one child! LOL! There are a number of books that are magical for me besides my very first book, Now and Always. Darkness Calls and the series it started, The Calling is Reborn Vampire Romance series, is a book of my heart because I wrote it at a very difficult time in my life and it gave me an escape that helped me through that tough time. It was also a very different book from what I had been writing and the challenge of stepping outside of my comfort zone really produced a novel that has endured for some time.
The At the Shore Series which started with One Summer Night is very special for me because I’m sharing a place that I love, the Jersey Shore and also a department store that is based on a store where my father and I worked for many years. Not to mention that my daughter and the shop she used to own have a cameo in the books in the series. There was something magical in that book about the romance between the hero and heroine as well as the way the two are able to save the heroine’s family’s department store chain. It embodied all that I hoped for my daughter’s business and so many other businesses that are suffering in an age of online shopping. It’s a book filled with hope and love and for that reason, it will always be magical for me.
Tell us about a “magical moment” in your writing or your career?
I have been blessed with many magical moments in my life, but one of the most memorable was getting the call from the editor who wanted to buy my first book. Not only was it magical because I was finally fulfilling a lifelong dream of having a book published, but my daughter was there beside me as I got the call. It was amazing to be able to share that experience with her and also share my love of writing. It’s no wonder that my daughter has published her own book (Following Jane, a story about a scavenger hunt left behind by none other than Jane Austen) and continues to find ways to express all the creativity inside of her.
For writers who use magical aspects in their books, what attracts you to those elements? For those of you who don’t, are there specific themes or elements you’re attracted to and find yourself going back to? Why do these resonate with you?
One of the themes I seem to always to go back to in many books is food. There is something about food that is sensual. Just think of that famous eating scene in Tom Jones. But there is also something else. Food binds us to memories and our culture in ways that other things can’t. Think about the aroma of turkey roasting on Thanksgiving Day. In my household it was the citrusy scent of roast pork in the oven on Christmas Eve. I remember one celebrity chef saying that once you lost the foods from your culture, you eventually lost that culture and it’s such a true statement. Those meals identify where your family came from, but more than that, they preserve your family’s history. I can think of many a time when I was cooking something and I’d share story with my daughter about how my mother and grandmother would cook that meal or something that happened that stuck in my memory. It gave her connections to those women that she sadly never got to meet. I think that’s why in many cultures women are the storytellers and keepers of the family history and I’m sure much of that history was shared over a cooking fire. It’s one of the reasons that I picked chefs to be the stars of my 2020 release from Hallmark, South Beach Love. That book is filled with all kinds of foods from my Cuban background and I dare you not to get hungry while you read it!
Creativity is a kind of magical experience. What inspires you, keeps you going, helps you when you lose focus, etc.?
It can be difficult sometimes when you are getting pulled in all kinds of directions, especially since I still have my full time job, am a mother and wife, and have other responsibilities with a non-profit I help to run. When I get distracted or find it hard to write the story, I take a long stroll along the boardwalk and empty my mind. I try to focus on the ocean waves and breezes. I lift my face to the sun and feel its warmth and am thankful for being where I am. Then I go back, pour myself a fresh cup of coffee, grab my laptop and get back to work!
