Tracey Livesay – Like Book Lovers Do

August 23, 2020 Leave a Comment

Today’s theme: It’s love at first sight, but it’s complicated! Be sure to check out the posts on Andie J. Christoher & Meryl Wisner too!

I’m loving Tracey Livesay’s Girls Trip series.

Whenever you love the first book in a series, you worry that the next ones might not be as good, but I just finished LIKE LOVERS DO and it was terrific!

The concept of Girls Trip is great. Four college friends who are on their way to super success in their respective fields, always take time for a yearly vacation together, recommitting to friendship and solidarity.

LIKE LOVERS DO features Nicole and her friend Ben. She’s just finishing her medical residency in Baltimore before she heads to North Carolina for a career-blazing fellowship, but right before it ends, she’s accused of unprofessional behavior by an entitled first year resident she had the audacity to reprimand.

Fearing her fellowship is in danger, she winds up in Martha’s Vineyard with Ben, who agrees to help her by asking his parents, very prominent physicians, to intervene on her behalf when she offers to act as his girlfriend to shield him from his ex who seems intent on a reconciliation.

Livesay sets up their real relationship and their fake relationship perfectly, creating a sexy conflict that ratchets up the tension between them especially once they’ve crossed the line into sexual awareness, thanks to an accidentally sent sext (sex text) from Nic to Ben, who;s been secretly in love with her since the first time they met.

Sizzling sexual tension meets heart-wrenching emotionalism, with a satisfying pinch of Nic standing up for herself against institutional and personal acts of racism.

Fun, fresh, smart and satisfying.

Sometimes faking it can lead to the real thing…

Driven and focused, Dr. Nicole Allen is an accomplished surgeon. With a tough past, Nic’s gone above and beyond everyone’s expectations. But when she disciplines an intern—a powerful donor’s son—a prestigious fellowship she’s awaiting is placed in jeopardy.

Coming from a successful family who runs a medical business empire, Benjamin Reed Van Mont is the black sheep, having chosen to start his own business instead. Though he’s not ready to settle down, he knows when the time comes it definitely won’t be with a workaholic doctor like his friend Nic—even if she’s had him re-examining his edict…more than once.

When Ben’s status-climbing ex-girlfriend finds her way back into his orbit, Nic proposes a swap of services. She’ll spend the week with Ben on Martha’s Vineyard, pretending to be his girlfriend—but only if he’ll have his family intervene on her behalf so she won’t lose her fellowship. How hard can the charade be?

But as they’re about to discover, they’ve sorely underestimated their true feelings for each other…

Happy reading!

Roselle Lim – The Delights of Magic, Paris & Tea

August 30, 2020

Lim’s writing is graceful and accomplished, allowing her to tell a layered, imaginative, entrancing tale with the lyricism and radiance it deserves.

Jenn McKinlay – Paris Books Are Always A Good Idea

August 30, 2020

This book was a great mix of deeper themes like extended grief and reclaiming one’s true self when life has become all work and no joy, held in tension with elements like reconnecting with old loves and finding them completely different than the hazy version of a decade ago.

Albertalli/Saeed – Say Yes to Yes, No, Maybe So

August 29, 2020

Today’s theme is: Some Awesome YA! Be sure to check out the posts on Sandhya Menon & Stephanie Perkins too! YES, NO, MAYBE SO is a warm, funny, engaging story, but it deals with so many issues in ways that are inspiring and uplifting, even as it reflects realistic disappointments and setbacks, that it is […]
